Why Do We Have Scars?

Why do we have scars?

I mean really? If God is this all powerful being why does he allow them to exist? To blemish and defile the pinnacle of his creative powers. Mankind.

Broken bones heal. Why don’t all wounds?

The answer? Bones heal but scars reveal.

They reveal where he have come from and remind us what it has taken to get where we are now. We are ashamed of our scars but we should be proud of them. We have earned them. They are battle honours that we fought long and hard for. Your story is told in your scars. Each one is a chapter of your life and each one adds to the person you are today.

You are your scars.

Yes God could wave a magic wand every time you bleed and most times he does. The wound heals and the new skin grows back leaving no sign of the injury. But not every time. No matter how skilful the surgeon or how intensive the therapy.

Stitches are a railroad to our souls, jagged paths that we need to walk in order to grow into who we are destined to become. Some say they are ugly but I say they are beautiful and lead us to greater understanding, knowledge and wisdom of ourselves and others . The wise cherish their scars. They have survived to tell the tale. The tale is in their scars.

We must forgive but in order to do so we must never forget. Weapons aim to dismember but scars allow us to remember. How can you forgive if you can’t remember? For forgiveness is not a one off quick fix. It is a journey, a life long work in process. We may have to forgive a person every day for the rest of our lives. Seven times seventy times and more, Jesus taught. Scars allow us to remember. Scars allow us to forgive.

You may feel broken, unworthy, soiled. But you are beautiful. They say beauty is only skin deep but beauty is in our DNA. It permeates every organ, every tissue, every cell. And there is breathtaking beauty in our scars. They are what make us unique. The unblemished are the incomplete. Our scars make us who we are. Our marks are magnificent.

Scars allow us to love and be loved. They should not be hidden. Scars shouldn’t scare. Instead they should inspire. Inspire and encourage. Scars are for the living and not the dead. Life flows from our scars like the clearest, purest water from a mountain spring. Scars are a tapestry leading to the very essence of who we are.

We are our scars. They complete us. They define us.

We are Stephen and Fionnuala and this is our story. We live in Northern Ireland, have been married for 17 years and have three kids - Adam, Hannah and Rebecca. We hope that our story will inspire and encourage others. We have walked a rocky road yet here we are today, together and stronger than ever. We are far from perfect and our faith has been battered and bruised. But an untested faith is a pointless faith. Just as a fractured faith is better than none at all. We hope you enjoy the blog.

  1. Hey! I think that scars maybe don’t define who we are as people, but they remind us of how far we have come. At least in some cases. Like my scars from self harm- I don’t let them define me, I let them remind me how far I’ve come with God’s help. Does that make sense? 🙂

  2. I hope for the good, yet do not believe blindly or follow where others tread just because it has been written to be. For my responsibility is me. The future is unsure, yet the past also unsure can be glimpsed via the perceptions of scars. Yet here and now must be the place to really be, peacefully living, compassionately not harming others and kindly to oneself as precious as any other. Oh look at the time, holds up an imaginary fob watch and acts like I am in a waistcoat, have whiskers and hops off.

  3. Wonderful post. Even God, in the form of Jesus, has scars too. It demonstrates to me the enormity of God’s infinite love that He has for us, His children. I am thinking that perhaps now I will always think of my scars as a way for me to see my growth – whether those scars are the visible ones on my body, or the ones that no one physically sees within myself. I think that the physical scars are those that I’ve been able to “get over” more easily, while the internal scars are the ones with which I’ve wrestled, and have given me more victories.

      1. I too have scars from procedures and such and I felt the same of they are unbeautiful and all, but like you mention yes they reveal where God brought me from and through and this life and they are a badge of that journey.

Taking it a lil deeper thr scars on my soul (mind, will, and emotions) id now going through a healing process to find them in the same light to overcome the pain, the memory, the paralyzing fear that wants to gripe and keep me from His will those “inner” scars are now being wirked through as my outer scars were. My inner life needs healing as in God word 1 Thess 5:23 to bring peace into all parts of my being.

  4. I read once that scars are no the mark of mistakes made, but that you were stronger than whatever gave it to you. I think that’s a beautiful way of looking our scars. They are reminders of things God gave us victory over, and even though they’ve left a mark, they show that we can rise above anything with God’s strength. I’m reminded of Romans 8:31-39 — nothing can remove us from the love of God.
