I’m Home Alone….What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

I’m Home Alone this weekend.

Well, almost. Fionnuala and Hannah are off to Dublin tomorrow for the Shaun Mendes concert. Hannah is fit to burst with excitement and I think Mrs Black is secretly looking forward to it as well, although she would never admit as much. They are packing as if they are going for two months, as opposed to a couple of nights. Hannah has saved enough euros to buy the entire merchandise stall at the show.

Adam is attending a formal on Friday night and has various chores and studying to occupy him the rest of the time they are away. Rebecca was going to stay at her Granny’s but has now decided, after consulting with her mother, that she will remain at chez Black to ‘look after Daddy.’ Isn’t it great to know that your children have such utter faith in your parenting abilities?

I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Fionnuala has stocked the freezer with enough frozen food to get us through a zombie apocalypse. We will be feasting on burgers and pizza, breakfast noon and night. Equally, reserves of Diet Coke have been replenished and, if all else fails, I am competent in the use of the toaster and microwave. Although probably not at the same time.

There are tasks aplenty to keep us all busy. The front garden needs weeded and the back yard power hosed. There are clothes to wash, socks to match and shirts to iron. Floors to sweep and dishes to wash. We also have a hyper border terrier to tend to. It’s not as if I’m going to lounge all weekend on the sofa with the remote control. Pffffft. Perish the thought. Whatever gave you that idea?

However….I do have a promotion board coming up that I need to prepare for. There’s also the Ulster – Edinburgh and Manchester United – West Ham games on the high definition 50′ television screen I now have all to myself. Oh….and a few training runs to fit in. I also have to keep the blog up to date, work on Chapter 2 of ‘Bomb Girl’ and obsessively scan my inbox for responses from literary agents.

Hmmmm. So much for the 48 hours of total relaxation I was anticipating. It seems I’m going to be busier than I first thought. It really is incessant at the moment. But I’ll try not to blow up the kitchen or put red clothes into the white wash by mistake and turn everything pink. I have my trusty 12 year old daughter to keep me on the straight and narrow. Failing that, I’ll ask the dog.

Have you a busy weekend ahead?

How do you cope when you’re home alone?

We are Stephen and Fionnuala and this is our story. We live in Northern Ireland, have been married for 17 years and have three kids - Adam, Hannah and Rebecca. We hope that our story will inspire and encourage others. We have walked a rocky road yet here we are today, together and stronger than ever. We are far from perfect and our faith has been battered and bruised. But an untested faith is a pointless faith. Just as a fractured faith is better than none at all. We hope you enjoy the blog.

  1. My sympathies are with Fionnuala. I have a month to teach my husband where everything is and how to use it before I’m away for 8-12 weeks on the other side of the world. I’ve prepared a list of where things are in the freezer and introduced him to the ‘defrost’ setting on the microwave. He would be happy to live on toast and marmalade with the occasional fish n chip supper, but he is diabetic with high cholesterol, won’t eat anything green or raw, and has been known to boil an egg without remembering the water. (If he knew what went into his morning smoothies or ‘tomato’ soup, he’d never eat them.)
Really though, it’s the old dog I worry about most (15 this year and grinding to a halt). Her companion died not long ago and she’ll probably think that I’ve deserted her too.

  4. Hahaha! Well just keep the Diet Coke flowing and you’ll be fine. Well, not too much. You might want to sleep at some point. As for me, I am NEVER home alone. I run to be alone. Happy Weekend!

  5. Stephen, don’t forget to set burglar traps and place the robots in the window so that it looks as if you are not alone. Don’t wash reds with whites, don’t undercook those pizzas, and don’t leave jelly smears on the kitchen counter ( wives hate that). Lastly, don’t consume too much diet Coke – it will destroy your kidneys. Other than that, have a great weekend.😎🙏

  6. I have a run and a lunch planned for Saturday, then church, another lunch, and a counseling session planned for Sunday. Should be a fun time! I should probably do some laundry at some point.

  7. Sounds like a busy weekend! Be sure to post about how it goes. We’ve got a busy weekend too – dance pictures on Saturday afternoon, my grandparents coming over for snacks Saturday night, and we are throwing the kids an Easter party on Sunday! Lots of prep work. Enjoy your burgers and pizza. ☺

  8. Sounds an exciting weekend for you. I am not too sure how mine would be but I am visiting my parents in the cooler climes here in Sri Lanka. Really looking forward to that as it has been extremely warm here with very high humidity levels. I love being home alone during weekends when my husband is away on work. Just as much as I miss him, I also manage to get a lot of work done and mostly spend some quality time doing things I enjoy like reading and attending to the few potted plants I have. Enjoy your weekend
