Do You Know Where Your Mobile Phone Is Tonight?

It arrived in the post this week. My new phone. Fionnuala had been counting down the days until my current mobile contract could be upgraded. She was more excited than I was, explaining the improvements in the I Phone XR I was receiving. Lots of long words I didn’t understand about mega giga bytes and pixels. Free minutes galore and lots of unlimited stuff regarding data and messages.

She painstakingly set it up for me, talking through the various new features. I felt like a petty criminal being photographed in a police station as she made me look this way, then that way as the face recognition password was installed. What’s wrong with a good, old fashioned six digit password? It was like explaining fire to a caveman. I sat baffled and bewildered as the education continued.

Finally I got my sweaty palms on this slimline piece of cutting edge technology. I will probably utilise about 10% of its all singing, all dancing capabilities. As long as I can make and receive calls, message people and access my apps then I’m a happy camper. There were one or two features, however, that got my juices flowing. And neither of them required any NASA wizardry, either.

It’s red!!!!

That’s right. After twenty years of black mobile phones, I threw caution to the wind and opted for a different colour. This was an utter revelation. I misplace my phone, on average, around 147 times a day. I invariably phone it, before realising I had it on silent. Cue much face palming and hunting of the house. But now, with a bright red phone, even a myopic fool like me can locate it in super quick time.

And, second, it came with stickers!!!!

Two Apple stickers. I can whack one of them on my battered laptop, et voila, I have a MacBook at no additional cost. I can now pose in arty coffee shops, writing ground breaking fiction, while sipping my frothy caramel steamer. No more hiding my laptop inadequacies under the table. Where will the second sticker go? Who knows! The world is my oyster with this one and the possibilities are endless.

An Apple fridge? Television? Car? Or maybe I’ll save it for that extra special occasion, jealously protecting my one remaining sticker like Gollum with the one true ring. It will be my preciousssssss and woe betide anyone who tries to pinch it from under my nose. Stickers are the way forward. Bitcoins are sooooo last year. You mark my words. I’ve seen the future….and it’s sticky!

Yes, Yes. I realise I’m a bit of a Luddite. But grant me these simple pleasures. As you read this, I won’t be head first down the back of the sofa, wondering where on earth I’ve put it down this time. Which means more blogging and less muttering and head scratching. Now, excuse me, while I nip off to polish my sticker and scout potential locations for its new permanent phone.

What colour is your mobile (cell) phone?

How often do you lose it?

Where would you put your Apple sticker?

  1. Pretty glued to my phone I am afraid, its usually next to my side at all times. Have a cheap alcatel which is black.

  2. My phone is gold but I have it in a pastel green case.

I have never really lost my phone but I have been on it talking with someone as I frantically look for it. Then the person I am speaking to says what are you doing? Oh I’m looking for my phone. 😂I’m that person.

  3. One time I had purchased a new phone and it died.

So I was driving to the store to where I purchased it and was rehearsing in my head what I was going to tell them.

And then my daughter pressed the power button and saved me from embarrassing myself.

  4. Mine is pink… and remember when you put it down, put it face down so you can 1) see color to find, and 2) to hide pop up messages from prying eyes!

I’ve not broken down to get a new iPhone. My 7plus is doing fine thus far. And it’s all paid for!

  5. But, can it send and receive faxes???

Silver. I’m afraid I might be becoming too predictable. Also nearly out of this plan, so new is looming. That awful frisson of excitement and dread at installing apps, and learning to drive….

  6. I’ve never used a single apple sticker. Now I feel I must track them all down from garage archives. Alas. iPhone 8 white, starry night cover. I misplace it constantly, it’s always on vibrate. 🙄

  7. My phone is white. I never lose it as that would be a disaster for me since I couldn’t afford to replace (I’m still paying it off). I’m unlikely to ever have an iPhone as they are way out of my price range, so I’m not sure what I would do with the stickers…

  8. I am a proud telephone Luddite. Mine is what I call a “StupidPhone,” and it perfectly meets my needs. I’ve used the same no-contract, pay-as-you-go service, with the same phone number, for twenty years, and have had to replace the phone only twice during that time (because it finally wore out and broke, not because I wanted an “upgrade”). Believe it or not, I never lose it, although it’s unobtrusively black, and so small, its tiny screen is useless for surfing the Web, so I don’t know why the manufacturer even put that option on it. Its diminutive size fits perfectly in my smaller-than-normal hands. No camera, no speaker-phone, just a couple of ringtones and silent mode. It has an alarm clock, which I do use sometimes, but all I need it for is to talk and text. That’s enough telephone tech for me.

I don’t do Apple, either. I’m a lifetime IBM PC Clone person. Your sticker is safe from me.

  9. Stephen – As it so happens, I lost my cellphone yesterday. It was my business cellphone, which I dislike disproportionately more to nearly every material item I possess but can live without. Until I can’t. Shortest version possible: I’d left a restaurant in late afternoon, ran to my car getting soaked trying to dodge torrential downpour of rain … and plunk … it must’ve jumped from my side pocket of my jacket. Hours later, arriving home after a Saturday of doing Saturday things, I realized it was gone. About 20 seconds of separation anxiety – more out of fear of paying financial reparations come Monday morning at work – than for missing it. I call the number from my other (personal) cellphone. A polite sounding woman answered. Quizzes me as where I lost it. Not sure exactly. Probably the restaurant. Wrong. This goes on far too long. It was resting in a puddle. I asked if I can pick it up. She says no. What? She doesn’t want a stranger coming to her house … She lives about 20 kms away … Tomorrow’s Easter … She suggested mailing it. I say, fine. Its being shipped to my office on Monday. It’s a nice break. Fabulous blog. Enjoying it all.

  10. I still have a Samsung Galaxy S8 in black. I drove off with it on the hood of my truck once. I made it out of the neighborhood without even knowing it, then once I got onto the main road it went flying off the hood. It’s banged up, but it still works. 🙂 My wife has an iPhone, but I’m still an Android guy. 🙂 God bless!

  11. It’s Red….. Red is love….. No I’m not taking about my phone…. Mine is blue.

And just like you, I use about 8% of its true potential. I don’t lose it as much…. And about that apple sticker… I’m not a big fan of the brand, but If I had a precioussss sticker, I’d probably keep procrastinating!🤣🤣🤣
