Support OCD Awareness Week

As today marks the start of #OCDAwarenessWeek I’m going to be blogging exclusively about this devastating and deeply misunderstood mental illness in an effort to educate and raise awareness. As many of you know, I have struggled with OCD for most of my life, particularly in my 20’s and 30’s. While I largely control it these days, it’s a dormant monster always waiting to pounce at the first sign of complacency or weakness.

Please show your support by liking, commenting on and reblogging posts.

If you too suffer from OCD, know someone who does or want to know more about the disorder then feel free to e mail me.

To those who have already done so, I apologise for the delay in responding. I’ll get caught up this week.

We are Stephen and Fionnuala and this is our story. We live in Northern Ireland, have been married for 17 years and have three kids - Adam, Hannah and Rebecca. We hope that our story will inspire and encourage others. We have walked a rocky road yet here we are today, together and stronger than ever. We are far from perfect and our faith has been battered and bruised. But an untested faith is a pointless faith. Just as a fractured faith is better than none at all. We hope you enjoy the blog.

  1. I certainly have the thinking patterns and struggle with perfectionism. If I can’t do it perfectly, I won’t do it at all. Overwhelm is a huge part of that. I’ve not been diagnosed, but it’s been mentioned as a possibility by a psychiatrist.

  2. Reblogged this on Under my skin and commented:
You know how strongly I feel about being an advocate and support of people with mental health issues, and not just because of my own experiences.
Stephen is a great writer Have you read ‘Skelly’s Square’ yet, his first book? Brilliant! And deals with – you guessed it – OCD. If you haven’t read it – go on. And be a pal, and share the word about this condition that really is NOT funny.
    Thanks!

  3. My younger sister has OCD (she had it even as a child, though it wasn’t diagnosed until college), and it has had a huge negative impact on her life 😦 I appreciate you raising awareness and am looking forward to reading your posts this week.
