Writing Matters – People Need Words

After a lengthy hiatus, I started work on Book 3 of the ‘Kirkwood Scott Chronicles,’ last week, tentatively titled ‘No Longer Forsaken.’ It’s been some time since I delved back into this fantasy world I’ve created, so was anxious as to whether I had another instalment in me. This is a fear I face in all areas of my life. That next book, that next run, the next obstacle that life throws in my path. The voice in my head is always there, telling me I’m not good enough.

Thankfully I’ve learnt, through bitter experience, to ignore that voice and forge on with whatever project I’m pursuing. And I’m pleased to say I’ve now reached 5000 words in the new book. After a shaky start, I’ve begun to find my literary feet again and the words are starting to flow. 2000 alone yesterday and I woke up early this morning to crank out another 500 before work. I often write best in the morning, when my mind is clear and focused.

I’m determined to keep blogging, though, as it is my bread and butter, my lifeblood. Without the blog, there would be no ‘Kirkwood Scott Chronicles’ and some of my most loyal readers are people I’ve met on this wonderful platform called WordPress. They might be shorter and snappier for a few months as I pour my creative juices into the book but, fear not, there will be regular content. I owe it to you all and I owe it to myself.

Writing is an art, a craft and it takes practice and patience. You don’t become an expert overnight, no matter how much raw talent you possess. It requires large quantities of persistence and perseverance. It’s not for everyone and many fall by the wayside both in the blogging and writing communities. My advice for what it’s worth? Don’t give up. I’ve seen so many do so and it’s a sad sight. Keep writing, no matter how invisible you feel. The people who need your words will find you.

We are Stephen and Fionnuala and this is our story. We live in Northern Ireland, have been married for 17 years and have three kids - Adam, Hannah and Rebecca. We hope that our story will inspire and encourage others. We have walked a rocky road yet here we are today, together and stronger than ever. We are far from perfect and our faith has been battered and bruised. But an untested faith is a pointless faith. Just as a fractured faith is better than none at all. We hope you enjoy the blog.

  1. I really need to see this today! I think that under the best of circumstances writers/artists do start to feel isolated when th ey are writing- but you can go out and shake that feeling off. With the limits we have because of Covid-19 that feeling of isolation can feel all encompassing and it’s depressing. Keeping in mind that our words are out there ‘socializing ‘ for us is a good thought to hang onto.

  2. I was kind of raised to be a writer from early on. In high school, I attended a class for specially chosen college kids, but was able to go even though I was in high school. I remember feeling incredibly out of place, but I’ll never forget this one thing that a visiting writer said, “You shouldn’t be sitting here listening to me. You should be off somewhere writing. If you want to be a write, you write. And you write and you write and you write. Eventually you’ll get good at it.” That has stuck with me forever. If you want to be a writer, you write. It’s simplicity is beautiful.

  3. Thanks for that needed encouragement. Writing is the instrument through which – I believe – my soul gets saved a little more each time I put finger to keyboard. But I also find myself too prone to giving in to discouragement. Your advice here is right on time and perfectly crafted.

  4. I don’t have any desire to write a book. It has never been a desire. However, I’ve been hearing for years that I need to journal (write). Someone introduced me to a site 750words.com and it is private and you just write what ever comes to mind. It is supposed to clear the mind? Maybe? I’ve done it for 5 days. 750 words is a lot. Sometimes my writing is complaining about how many more words I Habets go. Lol

  5. Writing has been a part of me since I was in 4th grade and was asked to write an assignment on what we wanted to be when we grew up. I knew immediately I loved the written word. Something about delving into a story that allowed me to escape the realities of this crazy world just fascinated me.

I’m afraid to say that over the years I have fallen away from it. But slowly I am working at getting back into it. 🙂 Thanks for posting this! I needed to read it!

Thank you. Good words for my heart at the moment. 🙂 I’m not always the best social blogger, but I wanted to say appreciate your reading and liking things on my blog from time to time. Confidence isn’t really my thing, but I’m on a quest to give more to my writing and creative self – regularly.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

  8. If you do need to blog a little less to keep on top of ye olde hauora (wellbeing), then by all means do it. I know I’ll still enjoy each of your nuggets if wisdom just as much.

Peace to you, and may your creativity keep flowing! 😁

  9. Thank you so much for the encouragement. In a world where social media and videos dominate communication, it is refreshing to find others who believe nothing will take the place of the written word. There are so many reasons for this, one of them being, that being an avid reader makes us more complete persons.
